THE OTHER CINEMA PRESENTS LA HAINE

5 Shorts Films

‘LA HAINE’ by Mathieu Kassovtiz’s 1995 film about the struggles of immigrants living in Parisian suburbs continues to resonate more than 15 years after its release. It is one of the most bold, raw and relevant films ever made about urban youth – that has been able to engage and inspire people to connect with the power of cinema.

THE OTHER CINEMA was created by the same team behind SECRET CINEMA, FUTURE CINEMA and FUTURE SHORTS. The Other Cinema is a pop up cinema network that believes in the power of community, local cinema and allowing people to experience culture wherever they are regardless of their circumstances.

THE OTHER CINEMA is putting on four special community screenings of the film in response to last year’s riots on the night before the mayoral elections, May 2 at Broadwater Farm, Tottenham, (free for all local residents) and May 4 at THE TROXY in Limehouse, featuring a live score by ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION. On May 5, the film will be screened at LE TRIANON in Paris on the eve of the presidential elections.

FIVE SHORT FILMS ABOUT HATE

THE OTHER CINEMA have commissioned five young people from Broadwater Farm to each make a short film about their interpretation of hate; all on location in just one day. The film makers are: DENZIL MINTAH, GARVIN BROWN, QUASON MATTHEWS, MAX WITTING and VERTEX.

One film will then be selected to screen before ‘LA HAINE’ with the winning film-maker also receiving a package of prizes that will help further develop their film making talent; including a distribution deal with Future Shorts, industry internship and mentoring provided by project partners BUDDY LONDON and REVOLVER.

All films will receive an on-line exhibition platform with FUTURE SHORTS. The finished films will be 2-4 minutes in length and in keeping with the aesthetic of ‘LA HAINE’ they will be in black and white.

BUDDY LONDON is the production company partner producing the sort films, with REVOLVER ENTERTAINMENT
backing the project as a whole and THE GUARDIAN will be covering events.
