GUILTY BY NATURE wins 212 Innovation Awards 2007
This beautifully shot short film by 29 year old film-maker Joseph Barnett followed the life-cycle of a shrub in a tough horticultural nursery, taking in multiple themes relating to the environment, control and genetics and telling its story through startling imagery and music, without any dialogue or human characters .
It was considered the most innovative entry by this year’s expert panel of jurors, who included Carolina Herrera, the designer’s daughter and the company’s senior fragrance consultant, Nik Powell, head of the National Film and Television School, Kate Vogel, Commissioning Editor for Short Films and Documentaries at Channel 4, Fabien Riggall, MD of Future Shorts, Sacha Spencer-Trace, editor of Marmalade magazine and Matt Bochenski, Editor of film magazine Little White Lies.

The winning prize included career advice from the National Film School, a place on a short course at the school to suit the winner’s requirements and a shadowing opportunity with a major UK director on their latest project, in addition to a distribution deal from Future Shorts. The runners up for 2007’s awards were Harriet Fleuriot – “A Short Collection of Hilary Flamingo’s Dream Vocations”, Joanna Strong – “Memorie”, Vanessa Caswill – “Pudding Bowl”, Rory Griffin – “Pretty Dolly Robson”, Jonathan Tappin – “A Day at the Beach.” All shortlisted entrants were presented with Carolina Herrera 212 prizes.
2007 winner Joseph Barnett had studied at the Kent Institute of Art & Design on a time-based media course, and has worked as a freelance cameraman and editor and at mymovies.net whilst working on his own film project. He has expressed himself delighted at winning the 2007 Innovation Awards and that this prize has come at a vital juncture in his career, when he was looking for advice on how to further his talents as a film-maker within the industry.
The 212 Innovation Awards were established by Carolina Herrera 212 as a means of discovering and nurturing creative talent. The focus for the first two years has been within the film sector, and the brief for short films submitted for 2007’s competition was simply “Innovation”.
